New Castle City Police Department has authority to enforce DUI laws within the city limits. The department is one of 20 police agencies in Delaware with Drug Recognition Experts. DREs evaluate drivers for drug impairment beyond what a breath test can detect, which is essential for building a § 4177(a)(2) or § 4177(a)(3) case under the Delaware Code. New Castle City Police participate in OHS multi-agency DUI checkpoint and enforcement operations. The department coordinates with New Castle County Police, Delaware State Police, and other local agencies for major DUI enforcement campaigns. New Castle County Police Around the City
The New Castle County Police Department covers the unincorporated areas surrounding the city. The Records Unit is at 3601 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720, phone (302) 395-8171. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The unit handles arrest reports, traffic crash reports, and traffic citations. NCCPD is also a DRE agency, with experts trained to evaluate drug-impaired drivers.
NCCPD records sometimes overlap with city police records when an arrest happens at the city-county boundary. Active warrants and sex offender information are available through the Records Unit, and the Delaware Sex Offender Central Registry is online for additional verification. NCCPD takes part in OHS-funded DUI checkpoints throughout New Castle County.
Delaware State Police in New Castle
The New Castle area is covered by Delaware State Police Troops 2 and 9. Troop 2 works northern New Castle County and Delaware City. Troop 9 covers Middletown and southern New Castle County. Together they patrol the corridors that pass through the city, including U.S. 13, North DuPont Highway, and Route 9. DUI arrests by either troop file into the same New Castle County court system.
Recent DSP cases in the New Castle area include a November 2025 incident where a Dover woman crashed on North DuPont Highway near Christiana Road in New Castle and was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI after her passenger was killed. A separate January 2026 investigation looked at a fatal pedestrian crash involving a driver from New Castle who showed signs of impairment.
